Exercise Physiologists work to assess and improve the overall health & fitness of children, adolescents and adults. EPs evaluate an individual’s cardiovascular fitness, muscular tone, strength, flexibility, body composition, and balance to develop a personalised exercise program. These programs work to improve not only the physical health of the individual, but also their mental health, capacity for attention, learning and/or retention in the classroom, and one’s quality of life.
Regular physical activity has been shown to be the most effective method of reducing stress, improving mood, and enhancing cognitive function. These benefits can positively impact academic performance and behaviour in school settings, while providing individuals with more positive mental health outcomes and a sense of purpose. Our Exercise Physiologists collaborate with healthcare providers to integrate exercise into holistic care plans, promoting healthy lifelong habits of physical activity and overall wellness in individuals.
Exercise Physiology can be done in the clinic, at a school visit, at home, or even in public facilities such as gyms and pools. Exercise Physiology in a pool is known as Hydrotherapy, which offers many additional benefits to land based exercise. Water buoyancy has been shown to reduce impact on joints and muscles, making it an ideal space for promoting muscle relaxation, injury rehabilitation, and sensory integration. Water-based exercise also improves circulation, while enhancing flexibility and range of motion. Hydrotherapy can also support motor skill development in a safe and enjoyable way, while teaching participants proper swimming techniques, water safety, and improving their confidence in pools and the ocean – very important in our Australian summer! Water based therapy also helps to strengthen muscles and improve cardiovascular fitness while placing less stress on the body and nervous system – this is due to the resistance of the water and its therapeutic effect.
Overall, Hydrotherapy has proven to be positively useful within all ages to grow and maintain fitness and wellbeing. If this sounds like something you could benefit from, please contact us at Educational Case Management to speak with our Exercise Physiology team today – exercisephys@ecmonhudson.com
